Milk Thistle Estrogen Detox: How Silymarin Supports Liver-Estrogen Clearance

The milk thistle plant or Silybum marianum is known for its active ingredient called silymarin. Silymarin is a substance that is widely studied for its estrogenic effects—and with the help of milk thistle estrogen detox is made possible.

Uses and Benefits of Milk Thistle Extract (MTE)

    MTE as a Natural Antioxidant

The antioxidants’ role in our body is to eliminate harmful free radicals. We get these free radicals through the following:

    • Environmental Pollution
    • Alcohol Intake
    • Smoking
    • X-rays
    • Ultraviolet Rays From the Sun
    • Industrial Chemicals

An abundance of free radicals can cause oxidative stress, which is highly connected to the development of certain types of cancer, inflammatory diseases, ulcers, and neurological diseases (such as Alzheimer’s disease).

Our body can fight these radicals through antioxidants acquired from food and supplements. As an antioxidant, the silymarin in milk thistle extract not only eliminates free radicals but also prevents them from forming.

Nowadays, milk thistle seed extract is mainly used to assist in the treatment of liver diseases and to improve liver function. Silymarin triggers metabolic processes that aid in reversing liver damage.

By using pregnenolone cream or pregnenolone supplements, the levels of the compound in the body increases, and this brings about various benefits such as fatigue relief, and delay of the aging process.

MTE as Treatment for Liver Diseases

Milk thistle seed extract eliminates toxins in the liver cells brought by excessive alcohol consumption. It can even be used for the management of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, as proven through liver function tests.

The possible use of silymarin in the treatment of hepatitis and liver cirrhosis are being studied as well, especially in relation to the compound’s anti-inflammatory effects.

    Human Gynecomastia scheme

    MTE for Estrogen Detox

Unusually high levels of excess estrogen can be unsafe.

It can lead to the development of BPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia and even cause prostate cancer cells to proliferate. Other minor effects of estrogen dominance are:

    • Gynecomastia or “man boobs”
    • Low libido
    • Erectile dysfunction
    • Anxiety and depression
    • Weight gain
    • Diabetes (type 2)

If you’re suffering from estrogen dominance, it’s best to consume soybeans and soy products with caution along with other food that are known to increase estrogen levels.

Although milk thistle (silymarin) is known for its estrogenic effects, its phytoestrogen is not strong enough to increase the risk for breast cancer. Its anti-estrogenic effects are actually much greater.

The silymarin found in the extract binds to estrogen receptors to block the effects of strong estrogenic agents such as estradiol. By serving as an estrogen blocker, it can lessen the production of estrogen in the body.

Our liver is basically the one responsible for maintaining normal hormone levels—and that includes testosterone which, by the way, is kept low whenever there’s too much oestrogen.

Since silymarin mainly affects the liver, it detoxifies the body from excess estrogen. That is why, aside from treating liver disease, milk thistle extract can support hormonal balance.

Side Effects of Milk Thistle Extract (MTE)

Milk thistle extract is generally safe to use and gastrointestinal side effects are rarely recorded. However, it can contraindicate some medicines taken for diabetes and may reduce the potency of antibiotics.

It’s still best and recommended to consult your doctor if you want to start taking milk thistle supplements.

    Targeting the Estrogen Problem

There are a lot of dietary supplements out there and they serve all sorts of purposes—as for milk thistle, estrogen detox is the primary focus.

If you’re struggling with estrogen dominance and other related issues caused by excessive levels of estrogen, MTE might just be what you need.

Estrogen Detox: Reverse Andropause & Bring Your Manhood Back

Estrogen, or oestrogen, is an essential hormone in female fertility. Men have it too; it’s linked to a healthy male reproductive system. However, having excess estrogen in both men and women can cause health issues linked to diseases such as the ones below. This is where estrogen detox can be helpful.

We’re putting emphasis on maintenance and not getting rid of it since we need some estrogen in the body for it to function properly.

Before we get into the ways in which you can detoxify the body of excess estrogen, let’s dig deeper into how estrogen works for men.

Estrogen detoxification, or estrogen detox, is a natural way to maintain healthy estrogen levels.

By using pregnenolone cream or pregnenolone supplements, the levels of the compound in the body increases, and this brings about various benefits such as fatigue relief, and delay of the aging process.

    Why Do Men Have Estrogen?

For years, researchers cited estrogen as a predominantly female hormone. It is only recently that we have understood how it works on men.

Adult males produce an average 10-40pg/ml of estrogen, far fewer than the average 15-350pg/ml of estrogen in women. Men only need that amount of estrogen, and it’s very important.

It turns out that a healthy hormonal balance in men requires the right balance of androgens and estrogens.

While the literature regarding estrogen and men’s reproductive health is limited, it’s been shown that a special kind of estrogen called estradiol plays a crucial part in the healthy development of sperm, testicles and overall sexual libido.

    How Does Estrogen Work?

Now, the literature that looks into exactly how estrogens work on men is limited. For now, we know that the body’s steroids (including testosterone) can turn into estrogen through aromatase enzymes found in the body’s tissues.

Specifically, the cytochrome P450 aromatase catalyzes the conversion of these androgenic steroids (i.e. testosterone, androgen, etc.) into estrogen and goes through a series of metabolic pathways in the body.

    Is the Liver Affected?

Along this metabolic pathway, the liver synthesizes estrogen hormones into metabolites: substances essential in overall metabolism.

This synthesis is why sex hormones in general are essential for the liver function, mainly:

But while estrogen is essential to the liver, having excess estrogen can damage the liver and affect liver function.

Like we said earlier, excess estrogen can increase fat cells. Aside from a fatty liver, several studies (here and here) indicate that too much estrogen can actually cause liver cells (and the organ) to be more susceptible to injuries.

Effects of Excess Estrogen on Men

Now, we already cited the role estrogen has on the male reproductive system. Aside from affecting liver function, having too much estrogen (a condition called estrogen dominance) can affect men in ways that can counter this role.

So far, these effects have been linked to:

In summary, excess estrogencan disrupt hormonal balance and the body’s overall metabolism. This affects both weight and sexual functions.

There are several ways on how to detox estrogen, but a lot of them had something to do with increasing testosterone levels to balance the estrogen out or slowing down the process of turning testosterone into estrogen.

By using pregnenolone cream or pregnenolone supplements, the levels of the compound in the body increases, and this brings about various benefits such as fatigue relief, and delay of the aging process.

Estrogen Detox: How to Naturally Detoxify Estrogen

Just because the environment’s getting more levels of estrogen doesn’t mean that there’s nothing we can do about it.

Like any other health concern, the best ways to tackle this issue are through proper diet and a healthy lifestyle.

There are several ways on how to detox estrogen, but a lot of them had something to do with increasing testosterone levels to balance the estrogen out or slowing down the process of turning testosterone into estrogen.

Now that we looked into the specifics of estrogen on men and how estrogen is contaminating the environment, let’s now focus on what we can really do to detoxify our body of estrogen.

    1. Exercise With HIIT

A study from the American Association of Cancer Research found that exercising helped lower the estrogen levels of 173 overweight women.

It’s similar for men, but it mostly involves increasing testosterone levels to balance out the estrogen, since there are not enough studies that look at estrogen levels of men.

When you’re below 40, chances are that endurance exercises such as walking, running and jogging can do your testosterone levels a favor.

But when you’re above 40, your testosterone levels actually decrease when you do endurance exercises.

A recent study from the European Society of Endocrinology found that HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) can increase testosterone levels while improving muscle power at the same time. This supports a 2013 study conducted by the European Journal of Applied Physiology.

First used in the 1900’s, it was popularized again by sports science after seeing what it can do to athletes. It basically means that you alternate between high-intensity exercises and low-intensity exercises.

For example, you try jogging for 1 minute. You exert all your effort 45 seconds into that minute jog and then brisk walk for the rest of the 15 seconds. You do this 7-8 times, 3-4 times a week.

    estrogen in beer

    2. Keep Alcohol in Moderation

In any healthy lifestyle, alcohol is a huge red flag. This is especially true with estrogen, which alcohol has.

The bad news is that alcohol can increase the risk of breast cancer in women. The good news is that alcohol and smoking don’t directly increase the chances of breast cancer in men.

Plus, a study that looked into over 8,344 men from Europe and America (the largest of its kind) found that, in moderation, alcohol can:

    • checkImprove sperm count
    • checkIncrease testosterone levels
    • checkImprove overall reproductive health

    But don’t be too optimistic.

Numerous studies suggest that heavy alcohol intake can promote the change of testosterone to estrogen in male drinkers and vice versa in female drinkers. Plus, alcohol can damage the liver—the very organ that turns sex hormones into metabolism the body needs.

Keep alcohol in moderation. Don’t drink too much.

    3. Stay Away From as Much Estrogen Disruptors as Possible

Ever since we have evolved into a more industrialized age, scientists have cited that there’s a contamination of estrogen in the environment: in GMO food, in alcohol, in manure, and even the soil.

Even water can have levels of estrogen, especially wastewater in polluted areas.

This affects fish, too. A 2004 study found that male freshwater fish had increasing levels of estrogen and higher concentrations of vitellogenin, a protein specifically found in female fish.

Since these environmental estrogens aren’t produced in the body, they disrupt normal estrogen production and mimic what estrogen does for the body.

There are two most common types of environmental estrogensthat we encounter in our daily living: phytoestrogens and xenoestrogens.

    soy beans

    A. Phytoestrogens

Phytoestrogens are estrogensyou get from plants. Unlike the estrogen in humans, phytoestrogens is a defense mechanism against herbivores.

They are not necessarily bad. In fact, a lot of these foods can lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases and bone diseases.

We have to remember, however, that the body can only take so much estrogen. Moreover, phytoestrogenic foods can also be bad for men’s health by increasing the risk of breast cancer and reproductive disruption in males.

Here’s a good list of estrogen-rich foods to take note of (and stay away from). The list includes barley, licorice, carrots and beer.

The most common type of phytoestrogen is isoflavones. To date, the food that has the highest amount of isoflavones is soy.

Soy flour alone can have a total of 172.6 mg/100 g.

Cruciferous vegetables (i.e. broccoli, cauliflower, etc), on the other hand, have the lowest amount of isoflavones; especially raw broccoli, with only 0.25 mg/100g of isoflavones. Cruciferous vegetables also help reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

    B. Xenoestrogens

Xenoestrogens are synthetic, environmental estrogens that are found in plastics, pesticide, and medicine. They are also harder to detoxify because they are fat-soluble and harder to digest.

These are far more dangerous than phytoestrogens and can do significant damage to breast cells. To prove this, a 2004 study found an increased risk of breast cancer due to estrogens, after comparing risk factors in 198 diagnosed women and 260 undiagnosed women.

To be safe, it’s best to choose organic, pesticide free foods that are good for your health (especially estrogen levels).

By using pregnenolone cream or pregnenolone supplements, the levels of the compound in the body increases, and this brings about various benefits such as fatigue relief, and delay of the aging process.

    4. Try Supplements

To combat estrogen dominance, you can try a combination of dim diindolylmethane and calcium d-glucarate.

Dim diindolylmethaneis a compound created after you eat cruciferous vegetables. Since we have already discussed that cruciferous vegetables are low in isoflavones, you don’t have to worry about this pill disrupting your normal estrogen production.

Calcium d-glucarate, on the other hand, targets xenoestrogens. Since it needs fat to dissolve, calcium d-glucarate uses something called glucuronic acid. What this does is turn the xenoestrogen into a water-soluble compound that can be easily digested and flushed out of the body.

Another kind of supplement you can look into is Japanese knotweed. It has Resveratrol that actually inhibits the cytochrome P450 aromatase and prevents it from turning testosterone into estrogen.

    Conclusion

While estrogen is essential for your reproductive health, having excess estrogen can do more bad than good.

Unfortunately, estrogen is widespread in the environment: in water, in food, and even in soil. So we take in more estrogen than we need.

This is why estrogen detox is important. For us to really have hormonal balance, we have to be conscious of what we put into our bodies.

  • White Button Mushrooms Extract: A Recipe to Lower Estrogen Levels

White Button Mushrooms Extract: A Recipe to Lower Estrogen Levels

A white button mushroom extract (Agaricus Bisporus, Champignon’s, fungi), is probably the best natural aromatase inhibitor you can find. Not only is this mushroom cheap, safe and readily available; when they are consumed in more substantial amounts on a daily basis, they can efficiently decrease levels of estrogen and help boost testosterone levels.
All while also leaving most of the 5α-Reductase enzyme and DHT levels untouched (libido benefits etc.), which most other mushrooms types do not.
This article is a short guide on how to best reap the benefits that white button mushrooms have to offer and show you their anti-estrogenic superpowers in all their glory. But first, let’s go back to the basics.

    hormone

    The Aromatase Enzyme

The aromatase enzyme can be seen as the master regulator of male and female hormones in the body.
Having high levels of aromatase enzymes equals more testosterone being converted into estrogen (the female hormone).
Women naturally have higher levels of estrogen (which is why its called the female hormone), and they require less testosterone than what we men do.
The enzyme tends to accumulate in fat cells which are also why women have naturally higher levels of body fat (curvy) than men.
Men require estrogen to a degree to maintain healthy sexual function and bone mass.

Now to all guys that are interested in boosting their testosterone levels, balancing levels of estrogen are crucial.
The best way to do this is by reducing the levels of aromatase enzyme which downregulates the production of estrogen, thereby maintaining higher levels of testosterone.

    Why Go All Natural?

If you where to go see your doctor or endocrinologist about your excess estrogen problem, it is likely they would prescribe you a pharmaceutical aromatase inhibitor such as Anastrozole/Arimidex.
Arimidex was initially researched as a treatment for breast cancer in women (which is primarily fueled by excess estrogen levels).
It works equally well to lower estrogen levels in men as it does in women; however, it is a very powerful drug and if improperly dosed can leave you with tanked estrogen levels for weeks on end.
Driving estrogen levels too low is equally bad as having too high levels and usually brings about a lot of suffering in the form of joint pain, dehydration, anxiety, depression and loss of sex drive. In such a case, make sure you keep track of them by conducting regular blood tests:

Pharmaceuticals should always be seen as a last resort when you have already tried everything else to fix your hormonal issues.
For most guys, there is simply no reason to go all hardcore with Arimidex and risk messing yourself up in the process.
Which is why in this article we want to introduce you to the best natural aromatase inhibitor that can help sort out your excess estrogen problems, increase testosterone and do so entirely without side effects. Did we mention that it is cheap as well?

    mushrooms in basket

    Why White Button Mushroom Extract?

While many kinds of mushrooms tend to be anti-estrogenic by inhibiting aromatase (reishi, oyster, lion’s mane etc), one inherent problem with many of them is that they also tend to inhibit the enzyme 5-Alpha Reductase (5-AR).
5-AR is the enzyme that converts testosterone into the more potent androgen DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). DHT is responsible for the libido and mood (alpha feeling) benefits that you get from testosterone as well as also being anti-estrogenic in its own regard.
In other words, ideally, you want more DHT and less estrogen, so consuming too many mushrooms that also inhibit 5-AR can be contra productive to our goals.
The great thing about white button mushrooms (Agaricus Bisporus) is that they possess the lowest 5-AR inhibiting effects of all mushrooms, resulting in something along the line of 1-2.5% inhibition only, as outlined in this study (picture below).
This makes white button mushrooms a very attractive food for lowering estrogen levels without any side effects or potential anti-androgenic effects.

    The Science

Now that we have established why white button mushrooms are the best mushroom for men to consume, let’s take a look at the science supporting its anti-estrogenic effects.
Most of below studies have been made on women (because of breast cancer research) but they are equally relevant to men as the process of lowering estrogen is the same in both sexes.

    1.    Researchers at The Beckman Research Institute found that consuming white button mushrooms decreased estrogen levels in a dose-dependent manner, meaning the more you eat, the greater the effects.
    2.    In this year-long study done by Chinese researchers, the combination of a diet high in mushrooms and green tea was investigated to reduce the risk of breast cancer (from excess estrogen). There was a significant statistical effect observed where such a diet showed reduced risk. It would have been interesting to see the same study done on prostate cancer as both are cancers that are hormonally driven by excess estrogen.
    3.    The following study investigated dried white button mushrooms extract as a treatment to reduce estrogen levels, and the results confirmed a reduction in aromatase enzyme as well as estrogen (estradiol, E2) levels after 12 weeks of daily consumption. The minimum effective dosage of extract seemed to translate back into around 100-130g mushrooms per day and for significant effects you would likely have to consume 2-3x this dosage.

How to Consume White Button Mushrooms

Not everyone is fans of mushrooms (honestly though steak with sautéed onions and mushrooms is an epic meal!) and for the ones who don’t like consuming them but still want to benefit, you can use white button mushroom supplements. However keep in mind the supplements are substantially more expensive than buying the plain mushrooms and making your own extract, which we will guide you to how to do next.

    white button mushroom extract supplement

Making a white button mushrooms extract is simple, since the bioactive’s in mushrooms are solvable in water and heat resistant, the only real challenge is to break up the mushroom fruiting body fibers to get all of it out.
We suggest using 500-1000g white button mushrooms per batch:

    1.    You either chop the mushrooms as finely as you can or if you have a mixer that can handle them you mix them, so they break up into as small pieces as possible.
    2.    Next, you boil the ground/chopped up mushrooms for 2 hours (or pressure cook for 1 hour). If you find the water evaporating before the cooking time is up, then just keep topping it up, so it does not burn. We also want to have some volume of water left at the end of cooking (adjust according to preference), since the leftover water will be our extract and contain most of the bioactive’s from the mushrooms.
    3.    After you finished boiling it, you have a few options depending on how you want to use the extract:

    mushroom omelete

  • You can remove the chopped/ground mushroom pieces (use them in omelets or eat as is with meals) and bottle the mushroom water liquid for use as a supplement. Depending on the volume of water and amount of mushrooms used, you would dose the liquid accordingly (1000g mushrooms with 100ml water left after boil would mean 10ml extract equals 100g mushrooms, so 10ml would then be your minimum daily dose to consume).
  • My own personal favorite is to just store the mushroom pieces/liquid in a jar in my fridge and mix a few spoons full into my omelets, it brings out a lot of umami flavor (trust me you will impress people with your cooking skills doing this).
  • You can also put everything in a mixer again and mix into a paste that can be consumed as is, used in cooking or dissolved in drinks. Alternatively, you can also let this paste dry in the sun, and you would be left with a dry powder that’s easier to store for long periods of time.

  • Conclusion

White button mushrooms are one of those essential foods that we recommend all guys to consume as often as possible.
Most guys notice a positive effect on libido and morning erections after consuming a few hundred grams of white button mushrooms daily for a couple of days straight. It’s really such a cheap and straightforward hormonal hack.
If you struggled with balancing your estrogen levels in the past or have issues with obesity, gyno, erectile dysfunction or hot flashes it is likely that consuming more mushrooms on a daily basis can help resolve them over time.

  • Estradiol Level in Men: Check Yourself If You Have These Nasty Symptoms

Estradiol Level in Men: Check Yourself If You Have These Nasty Symptoms

Estradiol Level in Men and Its Effects

We’ve always had this notion that estrogen is for women as testosterone is for men. However, recent studies on estradiol level in men show that both hormones are considered important for both genders.

That’s right, your estradiol level can greatly influence your wellness. Low levels promote the development of osteoporosis while high levels can increase the risk of cancer, arterial plaque, and prostatitis.

This means that the levels of estradiol in your body should hit the so-called Goldilocks zone – the “just right” zone. Not scarce, not over-the-top, but just right. However, before we discuss what level of estradiol you should maintain in your body, let’s learn more about this hormone in general.

    Estradiol Explained

Estradiol is a hormone that the human body synthesizes from cholesterol, just like all other steroids (testosterone included). It is a type of estrogen, a female sex hormone. There are abundant amounts of this hormone in the female breasts, ovaries, and adrenal glands. The placenta also produces estradiol during pregnancy.

The human body needs estrogen to survive. As men don’t have organs that synthesize enough of it (like the ovaries in women), they produce estrogen through the action of the aromatase enzyme.

The problem is that due to age and other health reasons, the human body can end up with too much aromatase activity. In turn, this leads to testosterone in the bloodstream getting converted to estradiol even if the body no longer needs estrogen. This decline in T levels can have unpleasant consequences including low libido, gynecomastia (the so-called “man boobs”), mood swings, and other manifestations of estrogen dominance.

The good news is that if your estrogen production is in overdrive due to obesity and other factors, there are supplements and natural ways to inhibit aromatase and lower estrogen levels. And, of course, get your testosterone levels back to normal.

    frustrated man

How is Estradiol Important to the Male Body?

As mentioned bove, estradiol is also present in males, although in much lower levels than in the female body.

In the human male body, estradiol is produced by the testes and the adrenal glands. This hormone protects sperm cells, although it is less important in sexual function in males than in females.

There is a reason why nature created estradiol. Although it’s been proven that estradiol is important for bone density, the role of this hormone in the male body composition, sex drive, and other elements is still under study.

One medical fact is certain, though. High levels of estradiol can cause breast tissue growth in males because of the decreased production of testosterone in the HPT (Hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid) hormonal axis.

    low sex drive

What Are the Effects of Low Estradiol Level in Men?

We already know what high levels of estradiol can do the male body. But what about when they are abnormally low?

In addition to decreased bone density, studies show that low levels of estradiol can result to even more serious illnesses.

A recent study on the effects of high testosterone and low estradiol levels on the male body brought some surprising findings. The goal of the study was to evaluate the impact of these hormonal fatures on fat mass, erectile dysfunction, and libido.

In the study, male participants were subjected to an increased testosterone level through Androgel supplementation. Half of the participants were subjected to suppressed estradiol by administering anastrozole which blocks the hormone from being converted from testosterone.

Those subjected only to high testosterone levels showed decreased body fat in the subcutaneous and abdominal areas. Sexual desire and erectile function were also significantly increased.

Those subjected to suppressed estradiol showed increased body fat in the subcutaneous and abdominal areas. There was also decreased improvement in erectile function and sexual desire.

This clinical study shows that estradiol plays an important role in sexual function and body fat regulation, as well as bone density in males. Higher estrogen levels also can lead to a hormonal imbalance in men. To suppress estrogen, there are supplements that can help you.

Another study has shown that simultaneous low estradiol and serum testosterone levels can increase mortality in males.

Here are other common signs of low estradiol levels:

    • Sleeping often and long
    • Unexplained fatigue
    • Retention of water or edema
    • Erectile dysfunction
    • Depression
    • Anxiety
    • Irritability

There is a recent study that seems to point to the effect of low estradiol levels in people with type 2 diabetes. These patients show lower than normal levels of testosterone and estradiol.

All of these studies show that estradiol plays an important role in men’s health and may even reduce mortality. Therefore, maintaining the proper level of this hormone is essential. To boost the levels of free testosterone in your body, supplements like DIM can help.

What’s the Healthy Level of Estradiol in Men?

According to studies, the healthy estradiol levels are between 10 to 40 pg/mL and 20 to 55 pg/mL, depending on the source. The latter study also indicates that the healthy range of free estradiol levels are at 0.3 to 1.3 pg/mL.

    blood test

    What Tests Are Available?

The only way to check your estradiol levels is through a blood test. It can be the same blood test you do during your annual physical checkup, but this time your estradiol and free testosterone levels will be checked as well.

Similar to keeping track of your blood pressure, blood chemistry, and cholesterol levels, regularly checking estradiol levels is important. Early detection of low levels of this hormone can help in preventing strokes, heart attacks, and bone fractures.

There are medications, however, that can affect the test results like glucocorticosteroids, some antibiotics (like ampicillin and tetracycline), and phenothiazines which are mental disorder medications.

Now that you have the results and you are below or above the range, there’s no need to worry. Each person reacts differently to low levels of estradiol.

As long as you don’t feel the symptoms discussed in this article, you are safe. But if you do get the symptoms, it won’t hurt to consult your physician and get hormone treatment to increase your estradiol levels.

A healthy estradiol level in men might be crucial to prevent and cure a lot of nasty illnesses. There are continuing studies about this hormone, and doctors are developing new methods of estradiol treatment.

  • Anastrozole (Arimidex) for Men: TRT Dosing, Infertility Protocol, and Estradiol Targets

Anastrozole (Arimidex) for Men: TRT Dosing, Infertility Protocol, and Estradiol Targets

Here’s one intriguing question that’s probably on your mind right now: why would someone take Anastrozole Arimidex for men? Well, to put it simply, it’s a safe way to reduce elevated estrogen levels.

Most men are not aware that their bodies also produce estrogen, which is traditionally seen as a female hormone. In fact, women and men have both testosterone and estrogen in their bodies; the only difference is the level of each.

Men have higher testosterone levels and women have more estrogen. In men, estradiol is the main biologically active form of estrogen, which is created by the conversion of testosterone.

Estrogen in women regulates the menstrual cycle and affects the reproductive system. In men, it plays such roles as regulating testosterone levels and cholesterol, maintaining libido, and enhancing bone and skin health.

However, as you’d expect, there needs to be a balance between testosterone and estrogen. Otherwise, it can have negative effects on a person’s health.

On Things to Watch Out For

When the estrogen level in men is too high, it can manifest through the following symptoms:

    • Enlarged breasts (also known as gynecomastia)
    • Feeling fatigued
    • Loss of muscle mass
    • Increase in abdominal fat
    • Sexual dysfunction (erectile dysfunction and decreased libido)
    • Depression and other emotional disturbances
    • Frequent urination, slow urine flow, and symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer

One thing to remember is that while estrogen can lower testosterone levels in men, it should not be mistaken for having low testosterone. This is a separate condition with its own set of symptoms.

    flavoring sprouts

    What’s Anastrozole for Men?

Anastrozole is a nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor. This class of drugs inhibits the aromatase enzyme that converts testosterone and other androgen hormones into estrogen hormones.

It’s available under the brand name Arimidex or as a generic drug and is generally given in pill form (taken once daily). It is not an over-the-counter medicine, so you will need a prescription to buy it.

Anastrozole is commonly given to postmenopausal women to stop or slow the development of early-stage breast cancer by decreasing the amount of estrogen they produce.

A doctor may prescribe this medication in addition to radiation, surgery, or chemotherapy to starve these cancers of the estrogen they use. It’s also prescribed in cases of late-stage breast cancer when tamoxifen (brand name Soltamox) no longer works.

In men, Anastrozole is used to reduce the effects of excess testosterone, which can be converted into estrogen by aromatase. It’s most commonly given to men who are undergoing testosterone replacement therapy to prevent the effects of high estradiol levels.

Bodybuilders and other athletes taking anabolic steroids may also take Anastrozole to dodge the side effects of steroid use, although the drug is not approved for this purpose.

    Risks and Benefits of Anastrozole

Elderly men may particularly benefit from taking Anastrozole. Past the age of 30 or 40, the testosterone produced in the testes gradually declines by around 1% a year.

However, the levels of estradiol continue to remain high due to often increased amounts of fat in middle-age and elderly men, particularly around the abdomen, as well as rising aromatase activity.

In particular, Anastrozole can be effective in cases where low testosterone is due to hypogonadism.

Hypogonadism is a condition in which a problem with the pituitary gland or testicles prevents the body from producing enough testosterone.

This condition is usually treated through hormone replacement therapy to reduce the symptoms of low testosterone. Anastrozole, however, may be a viable alternative to traditional testosterone therapy or treatment.

At the same time, you should consider the long-term effects of taking Anastrozole. For instance, it has been associated with lower bone mineral density, requiring patients with pre-existing osteoporosis to undergo regular monitoring as well as undertaking strategies to protect bone health. Also while using Anastrozole regular blood tests are needed to confirm you are not taking too much or too little:

    Natural Testosterone Boosters

If, for whatever reason, taking Anastrozole is not appropriate for you, there are several alternatives you can choose for increasing your testosterone levels without resorting to medication.

For one, you could increase your diindolylmethane (DIM) levels. DIM doesn’t actually boost testosterone production but instead ensures that the hormone remains unbound so that the body can use it.

You can increase your DIM levels by eating more cruciferous vegetables, which supplies the body with indole-3-carbinol (I3C) – when broken down, this releases DIM as a byproduct.

Of course, you could also go for natural aromatase inhibitors. Although there are many advantages to laboratory-made estrogen blockers, they can have serious side effects.

This is why it would be better to pursue natural alternatives, such as eating food rich in nutrients that help suppress estrogen and maintain hormonal balance.

Keep in mind that not all supplements made in the laboratory are bad. There are many manufacturers that produce supplements with natural formulations, using plants with known healing properties and naturally occurring compounds as the main ingredients.

For instance, Brassaiopsis Glomerulata is a shrub found in Vietnam whose leaves appear to have bioactive compounds that exhibit aromatase inhibition effects.

Pine Bark Extract is a natural alternative to hormone therapy GnRHa, which stops estrogen production. This herb is not only believed to have similar effects but also reduces erectile dysfunction symptoms.

Before choosing a supplement, make sure that you read the label carefully so you’ll know what ingredients are included in the formulation.

You should also read reviews from trusted sources since they can provide you with important information about the product. But, of course, the best option would always be to visit your doctor before taking a new supplement.

    The Bottom Line

While Anastrozole is still the main way to balance hormone levels and increase testosterone, it may not be for everyone. This is why you should explore the various alternatives for boosting natural testosterone production.

While they may take longer to provide the desired outcome, at least you won’t have to worry about suffering from the side effects associated with Anastrozole Arimidex for men.

  • DIM for Men: Diindolylmethane Dosing, Estrogen Metabolism, and TRT Stack Pairing

DIM for Men: Diindolylmethane Dosing, Estrogen Metabolism, and TRT Stack Pairing

When thinking of natural testosterone boosters, DIM for men is definitely one of the first ones that come to mind. However, if you’re thinking that DIM is a perfect solution given its popularity,  you might be surprised with what you’re about to read.

You might think that DIM directly affects your testosterone production – the fact is, it’s not that simple. This unique chemical compound keeps testosterone unbound, free to enter various bodily regions in order to provide its numerous benefits.

First things first, getting diindolylmethane (DIM) isn’t hard – and you don’t have to go about it by taking capsules. Eating cruciferous vegetables will supply your body with indole-3-carbinol (I3C), which yields DIM upon being broken down into its bi-products.

Of course, we’re not saying that investing in a good DIM supplement is not a smart move. If you’re the kind who’s not too keen about the taste of broccoli, kale, cabbage, and brussels sprouts, going out and buying a DIM dietary supplement is definitely a perfectly viable option.

    Beating Estrogen Dominance

Now, how exactly does di-indolyl methane (yes, it can be written that way), or DIM, increase the availability of free testosterone in the bloodstream? The chemical compound actually works on estrogen (or oestrogen) metabolism.

Whenever the body’s estrogen levels rise, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) is released. Estrogen binds to SHBG, losing the ability to wreak havoc on the male system – the problem with this, however, is that testosterone also gets bound.

Instead of achieving hormonal balance, problems emerge given the lack of unbound testosterone in the bloodstream. For instance, menopausal women are not so much effected by low levels of the male hormone. However, in your case, a lack of testosterone can lead to vast array of physiological and psychological consequences.

In the presence of DIM, estrogen metabolism shifts away from mostly creating metabolites with strong estrogenic effects, to the production of weaker metabolites

DIM prevents the female hormone estrogen from having too much of an impact on your body.

By using pregnenolone cream or pregnenolone supplements, the levels of the compound in the body increases, and this brings about various benefits such as fatigue relief, and delay of the aging process.

This effect of DIM can be very beneficial, especially if you have excessive aromatase activity and you’re not taking any aromatase inhibitor at the moment. Keep in mind that aromatase converts testosterone to estradiol, the most potent form of estrogen, cranking up the female hormone levels in your body.

DIM’s impact on the metabolism of estrogen provides another benefit, since its effect can increase the levels of “good estrogen”. 2-hydroxy estrogen metabolites have the ability to free bound testosterone, taking its place instead (through an estrogen receptor).

Of course, this leads to an increase in available testosterone, meaning the hormone’s effects will become much more visible. You won’t have to worry as much about muscle loss, and getting ripped should become even easier with testosterones ability to ramp up protein synthesis.

Not Just for a Better Physique

Improving your hormonal balance by taking DIM isn’t merely about getting a better-looking body. It comes with other remarkable perks, such as having improved prostate health – even preventing prostate cancer cells from growing further and causing more damage.

Your chances of suffering from prostate enlargement (a typical problem related to aging), can also be reduced with the help of DIM.

By using pregnenolone cream or pregnenolone supplements, the levels of the compound in the body increases, and this brings about various benefits such as fatigue relief, and delay of the aging process.

DIM, by facilitating the conversion of bad estrogen into good estrogen, cuts the production of prostate-specific antigen protein (PSA).

To be perfectly clear, it is estradiol or bad estrogen that triggers the increased secretion of PSA in the prostate. It’s that buildup of antigen that’s often associated with prostatic growth, and the increase is even used as an indicator of prostate cancer risk.

Another benefit comes from the fact that good estrogen serves multiple roles in the human body. These 2-hydroxy estrogen metabolites (such as 2-hydroxy estrone and 2-hydroxy estradiol) function as antioxidants, meaning they can protect you from other kinds of cancer.

In the context of bodybuilding, fighting off free radicals is vital. After all, working out triggers the production of these dangerous radicals, making you a lot more susceptible to diseases associated with DNA damage – and don’t forget that free radicals make you more easily fatigued, as well.

If you’re wondering how effective these estrogen metabolites are in disabling free radicals, well, just consider the fact that some of them are even more potent than tocopherol (a vitamin E compound). And unlike the popular antioxidant, higher levels of good estrogen won’t increase your likelihood of developing prostate cancer.

    Possible DIM Downsides

Given how scientific understanding is always evolving, it isn’t surprising that some experts are beginning to question the need for DIM supplementation. A 2016 study, for example, has shown that the chemical compound could negatively affect sperm quality.

It was also discovered in the same study that DIM intake can trigger an increase in oxidative stress, particularly in the testicles – partially explaining how sperm quality suffers. There’s also the possibility of suffering from reductions in testicular size.

Keep in mind though, that these side effects seem dose dependent, meaning they will only be a problem if you take in too much DIM. Unfortunately, there’s no established safe amount for DIM intake – which is why sticking to eating cruciferous vegetables or only low-dose capsules if you have a confirmed estrogen problem,  might be the best course of action.

Aside from being associated with oxidative stress and testicular troubles, the chemical compound has been found to prevent dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from effectively serving its function. While not as important as testosterone in muscle development, DHT does enhance protein synthesis and libido.

Of course, to some, knowing that DHT gets blocked by DIM is a good thing. DHT, after all, is seen as one of the main reasons why hair loss is such a concern among the male population – and not just by those nearing their golden years.

Taking DIM as a supplement may also cause you to have darker urine and increased bowel frequency. Suffering from migraine and gas isn’t unlikely as well – but then again, minor side effects such as these don’t always manifest at the same extent (you might not even notice them).

Even after learning about the potential risks, many still decide to take the estrogen blocker since the estrogen problem outweights the risks of DIM supplements. Again, many of those risks are dose dependent.

    Three Ways to Consume DIM

If you’re among those eager to continue, you’ll have to consider that there are three choices available to you – eating cruciferous vegetables, taking DIM supplements, and supplementing with I3C. Obviously, each of these options come with their own pros and cons.

Let’s start with eating veggies, which is arguably the safest choice. By going this route, you won’t have to worry about getting too much DIM that your DHT balance gets ruined – and it’s also unlikely to affect testicular function.

Unfortunately, that safety is a double-edged sword. Although you won’t be putting yourself at any realistic risk, you’ll find it harder to benefit from DIM’s capacity to convert harmful oestrogens into their health-boosting counterparts.

To get enough DIM from food, you’ll need to eat at least two pounds of cruciferous vegetables daily.

By using pregnenolone cream or pregnenolone supplements, the levels of the compound in the body increases, and this brings about various benefits such as fatigue relief, and delay of the aging process.

To get enough DIM from food, you’ll need to eat at least two pounds of cruciferous vegetables daily. That’s quite a lot, but probably not as much as you’d think – a head of cabbage that weighs a pound, for example, yields just four cups of shredded cabbage.

Moving on, let’s talk about DIM supplements. As we’ve said, these are highly recommended and quite popular, mainly since they’re more convenient to take and don’t cost much – it’s safe to say that they’re even cheaper than vegetables.

The problem with these supplements, however, lies in the amount of DIM they contain. You’ll easily find capsules that contain several hundred milligrams of the chemical compound, even though 60 milligrams should be more than sufficient.

It’s also common for these supplements to have other components that could either improve your current nutrition, or get you close to suprassing the daily limit of certain nutrients. That being said, it is important to carefully check your chosen product against your existing supplementation regimen.

Lastly, there’s I3C supplement, which is ultimately broken down in the gut to release biologically active DIM. You might be wondering why anyone would take this instead of directly supplementing with DIM – aside from better dosage control, there’s not much to gain from it.

A Few More Things About DIM

Choosing a good supplement or eating several pounds of cabbage daily will allow you tap into DIM’s beneficial effects. However, that doesn’t mean you’ll get to maximize your newfound testosterone booster – to enjoy its full potential, you should also get enough calcium D-glucarate and omega fat.

Calcium D-glucarate, aside from being an excellent detoxifier, helps accelerate estrogen metabolism. As for omega fatty acids, you’ll need them to optimally process (and digest) DIM – the chemical compound is fat soluble, highlighting the need for a carrier in the blood.

Keep in mind that taking omega fatty acids any time of the day won’t cut it. You must take them together with your chosen DIM supplement, ideally during high fat meals – and that applies even if you decide to take I3C capsules or eat cruciferous veggies.

Overall, while taking DIM for men can be advantageous, it isn’t the perfect testosterone-raising supplement many believe it to be. While it might increase your free testosterone and protect you from certain disease, you’ll still have to think about how it works in relation to what you really need.

  • 6 Natural Aromatase Inhibitors: Foods, Mechanisms & Honest Stack Placement

6 Natural Aromatase Inhibitors: Foods, Mechanisms & Honest Stack Placement

Aromatase might not sound dangerous, but it can actually cause harm in more ways than one – your sex drive, muscle mass, and even bone density can be severely affected. That’s why you should consider taking natural aromatase inhibitors.

You’re not worried since you’re taking anabolics? You’ll have to keep in mind that aromatization (the process that aromatase facilitates) mainly exists to maintain hormonal balance.

That means whenever there is suddenly too much testosterone in your body, there’s a chance that the hormone will be converted into estrogen. And as you’ve probably heard already, having too much of the female hormone can be harmful.

Gynecomastia (or male breast development) is among the effects of excessive estrogen. While not a serious problem, it can definitely cause pain – both physically and psychologically.

    Natural Inhibitors to the Rescue

If you’re thinking of fighting aromatase naturally, you should consider these popular natural products picks:

    Red Wine

Red wine’s aromatase-inhibiting properties are mainly due to resveratrol – a compound produced by plants as part of their defense mechanism. This polyphenol is most commonly found in grapes.

If you’re wondering whether white wine contains resveratrol at all, just consider this – the compound can only be extracted from the skin of grapes. As you know, white wine is made specifically from the pulp.

    japanese knotweed supplement red wine

Resveratrol isn’t merely about preventing aromatase action. It’s also capable of boosting testosterone production, mainly by increasing the amount of steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) within the cells.

StAR determines that rate of steroidogenesis – the process in which steroid hormones (and that includes testosterone) are formed from cholesterol molecules.

It’s unfortunate though that resveratrol is quickly degraded in the liver. This means that only a small amount of the compound manages to enter the bloodstream – and yes, it needs to be there to provide its perks.

Even if you want to beat aromatase, you shouldn’t solely rely on red wine. Also, drinking more than three glasses daily isn’t a smart move since excessive intake can raise your blood pressure.

Red wine’s aromatase-inhibiting properties are mainly due to resveratrol – a compound produced by plants as part of their defense mechanism.

    olive oil

    Olive Oil

Olive oil’s beneficial effects can be attributed to oleuropein – a bitter compound typically found within olive leaves. This is considered a strong natural aromatase inhibitor and is on par with resveratrol.

Though yet to be fully explored, olive oil shows potential in boosting the effectiveness of other aromatase inhibitors.

This common cooking ingredient managed to enhance the estrogen-suppressive effects of both letrozole and anastrozole – two well-known estrogen suppressors used by bodybuilders.

What’s so good about olive oil is that it can easily be added to all kinds of dishes. Whether you’re preparing salad or seasoning a steak, this Mediterranean miracle will surely make your food healthier and more flavorful.

    Oysters

Oysters, despite being rather simple in structure, actually rely on sexual steroids for reproduction. In a study examining the androgen metabolism of Crassostreagigas, a detected aromatase-like activity was suppressed by pharmacological compounds present within it.

    oysters

While the specifics of this interaction are yet to be mapped, the researchers managed to identify the compounds that exhibited aromatase-inhibiting effects. These include 4-hydroxyandrostenedione and cytochrome P450 inhibitors.

You’ll be glad to know that oysters are also rich in zinc– a mineral that’s necessary in testosterone production. In fact, deficiency in this micronutrient has been linked to hypogonadism, which in turn has been associated with erectile dysfunction, gynecomastia, and even muscle wasting.

    cruciferous vegetable

    Cruciferous Vegetable

Cruciferous vegetables suppress aromatase enzyme activity, made possible by a compound called 3,3′-Diindolylmethane (DIM). This compound is classified as a phytochemical, specifically the kind that has anti-cancer properties.

There’s a study in which the anti-estrogenic effect of 3,3′-DIM was analyzed. It was discovered that the compound can be taken to prevent the development of thyroid proliferative disease (TPD).

DIM doesn’t simply prevent estrogen from functioning though. It works by keeping the right balance between good and bad estrogen – the latter being often associated with increased cancer risk and mood problems, despite supporting bone health to a certain extent.

Getting a good dose of DIM doesn’t mean you’ll have to eat cabbages and Brussels sprouts daily. There are many other cruciferous vegetables for you to enjoy, such as kale, arugula, broccoli, collard greens, watercress, and cauliflower.

    White Button Mushrooms

In a study about the role of estrogen in cancer, it was shown that the phytochemicals present in white button mushroom suppress aromatization. This simply shows the potential of mushrooms in controlling aromatase activity.

    mushrooms

Actually, they’re so potent that they exhibit the capacity to shrink tumors, aside from slowing down the spread of cancer itself. This serves as further proof that the white button mushroom is among nature’s most effective aromatase inhibitors.

Here’s something that should make this edible fungus even more tempting – it manages to reduce swelling even at the cellular level. Since the formation of plaque in the arterial walls usually start with inflammation, the mushroom’s anti-inflammatory effect is definitely welcome.

If you do decide to shop for mushrooms, you should specifically search for Agaricusbisporous. While it’s likely that other mushroom varieties also have aromatase-inhibiting effects, this particular kind is the most extensively studied.

    celery

    Celery

You might have heard that celery is an aphrodisiac. Well, it boosts sex drive because it increases the availability of testosterone (or to be more specific, androsterone).

Celery’s effectiveness as an aromatase inhibitor though, is due to the fact that it contains apigenin – a flavonoid commonly found in plants with anti-inflammatory properties.

How does this compound prevent the conversion of testosterone into its female counterpart? Simply put, it blocks two enzymes that allow aromatization to take place, namely 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and aromatase itself.

As you’d expect, celery isn’t limited to that purpose (much like the other food items featured on this list). For one, it’s quite effective in lowering blood pressure and reducing cholesterol levels.

It also rids your body of excess water, while keeping you hydrated. That’s made possible by celery’s diuretic effect and its considerably high water content (it’s actually around 95 percent water).

Being relatively cheap and safe, natural products are becoming more and more popular as of late – even among the bodybuilding crowd.

    Alternatives From Laboratories

You might be wondering why you should go for any of these natural aromatase inhibitors. After all, you can easily purchase synthetic estrogen blockers and other similar supplements.

Those pills even offer all sorts of perks, much like their natural counterparts. They won’t require much of your time either, especially since you won’t have to stay in the kitchen preparing them.

Most importantly, supplementation allows you to take in larger amounts of anti-estrogen compounds within a shorter time frame. The amount of inhibitors you’ll get from a glass of wine will surely pale in comparison to a single dose of these synthetic solutions.

Well, although aromatase is best kept at a minimum, it still plays an important role in the body. Supplements that block the enzyme (given their potency) can cause serious health problems if not taken in proper quantities – and to convince you, here are some examples of those concerns:

    Joint and Muscle Pain

Joint pain or arthralgia is a common effect of having too little aromatase. You might experience pain in your hands, wrists, feet, ankles, knees, and in other parts of your body.

The good thing is that this is a short-term issue. There are no reports suggesting that aromatase inhibitors can lead to permanent joint or muscle damage.

    Cardiovascular Problems

A severely low estrogen level can cause cardiovascular problems, including heart attack or stroke. Estrogen helps keep both total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (aka bad cholesterol) levels in check.

Any unnatural changes in the heart’s electrical pulses are also mitigated by estrogen. Aside from that, depriving yourself of the hormone may limit the blood supply in your heart.

Any unnatural changes in the heart’s electrical pulses are mitigated by estrogen. Depriving yourself of the hormone may limit the blood supply in your heart.

    Mental and Emotional Stability

Estrogen also serves as a neurosteroid, meaning it influences how your neurons work. Not having enough of the hormone may negatively affect your memory, emotion, personality, and mood – even major depressive disorder becomes a possibility.

While it’s true that testosterone should have a protective effect when it comes to these things, it still needs to be converted to estrogen to function in that manner. Also, the conversion specifically needs to occur within the brain.

Going With the Safer Option First

In several key aspects, natural aromatase inhibitors are definitely outclassed by laboratory-produced estrogen blockers. However, you should be cautious of the negative effects that these pills can cause.

Even if some of these effects are only temporary, it won’t hurt to be a bit more cautious – we’re talking about your health and physique, after all. Surely, it would be hard to justify the joint and muscle pain since you won’t be able to engage in your daily workout routine.

If you’re just looking for ways to maximize and maintain your gains, it would be better to choose the safer option and just enjoy meals containing any of the food items listed here.

However, if you’re really serious about skipping these natural aromatase inhibitors, you should at least consult with a doctor or run a blood test before taking any supplements. Know how much anti-estrogen you need by checking your estrogen levels first:

  • Estrogen Dominance: How to Lower Estrogen Levels

Estrogen Dominance: How to Lower Estrogen Levels

Estrogen dominance and excess levels of estrogen are bad for your health. In this article, we will learn how to lower estrogen levels. Both testosterone as well as estrogen, are two important steroid hormones that can be found in both women and men, although in different ratios.

For women, the more dominant hormones is estrogen, along with progesterone. Estrogen hormone is primarily responsible for the development of female characteristics, and progesterone plays an important role in menstruation and pregnancy.

On the other hand, for men, testosterone is the more dominant hormone. Testosterone is mainly responsible for the development of male traits and characteristics such as muscles, sexuality, fats, and bone.

Hormonal imbalance in the ratios can lead to unflattering physical attributes such as weight gain or presence of traits from one’s opposite sex. The more subtle effects, at the physiological level, due to dwindling or excessive levels of any of these hormones may also lead to mood changes or decreased sex drive.

One specific hormonal imbalance that mostly happen to both men and women is increased estrogen in excess levels, which is known as estrogen dominance, and is a serious condition.

    Excess Estrogen: The Causes

    estrogen chart

In females, estrogen levels increase because of the following:

    • Puberty
    • Medical Conditions: Overweight, Obesity, Diabetes, and High Blood Pressure
    • Pregnancy
    • Certain Medications Like Estrogen Containing Drugs Such as Ampicillin, Steroids, Tetracyclines, and Phenothiazines
    • Tumors: Ovaries or Adrenal Glands

On the other hand, high estrogen may occur in males due to:

    • Aging
    • Inflammation
    • Excessive Testosterone Therapy
    • Stress
    • Increased Body Fat Relative to Muscle Mass, Obesity
    • High Base Line Estrogen Levels

    Symptoms of Estrogen Dominance

Estrogen dominance can in both sexes be experienced differently. In females, high estrogen symptoms include:

    • Swelling and increased sensitivity in the breasts
    • Irregular menstrual period and worse premenstrual syndrome
    • Depression
    • Insomnia
    • Mood Swings
    • Anxiety Disorders
    • Fibrocystic developments (benign tumors) in the breasts

    man

Men also have their share of high estrogen problems, especially if you are already on TRT:

    • Sexual dysfunctions including poor erection and infertility
    • Gynecomastia (also called “man boobs”)

Moreover, both sexes may actually suffer from the following:

    • Weight gain
    • Decreased sex drive
    • Emotional disturbances or moodiness, anxiety, and even depression
    • Excessive Fatigue

If any of the above issues resonates with you, consider doing a blood test to check your levels of estrogen:

    TheFlipside: Low Estrogen

The opposite of high estrogen hormone is not any better. Lower estrogen levels can only lead to a different set of physiological disturbances for both men and women. Few bad effects of high estrogen can also be exhibited during low estrogen levels such as weight gain and decreased sex drive for both sexes.

Let us recall that estrogen does the following:

    • Delays skin aging
    • Maintains bone mass
    • Regulates signaling related to cardiovascular functions
    • Influences the brain; including memory and motor functions
    • Plays a role in blood clotting, maintaining the thickness and strength of the urethral lining and the vaginal wall
    • Can even influence skeletal muscle mass and muscle strength
    • Has roles in the male reproductive functions and influences fertility

This probably means that if your estrogen levels are too low, you could possibly suffer from weak bones, early skin ageing, and problems with some brain functions.

The key is to keep balance in these hormones, however this can be tricky in modern times. Don’t give up, we will soon present you actionable solutions. But first let us review the roles of estrogen and the positive impacts of maintaining this hormone at optimal levels.

How to Balance Levels of Estrogen

    estradiol chart

Balancing hormones is easier said than done. Feedback from cells in our body monitor estrogen levels relative to other hormones, all while considering our genetic predispositions, current health practices, diet, and even medications, if any.

We are, however, not quite helpless. We can find better ways to manage  hormonal changes that take place in the human body. If you are determined to get your sex drive back as soon as possible and get rid of any extra belly fat, try out the following ways on how you can conquer estrogen dominance:

    medications and supplementation

How to Lower Estrogen: The Pharmaceutical Way

Supplementation is one of the best ways in controlling estrogen levels. Supplements are helpful for those who need quick results or have genetic predispositions that can render their hormone modulation efforts futile.

There are two categories of estrogen blocking dietery supplements. Both of which are also used in addressing breast cancer in women:

    • SERM (Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator): As the name suggest, SERMs are compounds that may interact or bind with estrogen receptors to either stimulate (agonist) or prevent (antagonist) the production of estrogen as a way to control its overall levels. Despite the benefits, pharmaceutical SERMs use also has its disadvantages including potential thromboembolic disorders and in worst cases, uterine cancer. However natural SERMs are completely safe.
    • AI (Aromatase Inhibitors): The use of aromatase inhibitors is the most popular way to control high estrogen levels by directly inhibiting its production. However, just like SERMs, this type of therapy can have adverse effects especially when it depletes too much estrogen and brings levels too low. Also in the case of AIs, natural aromataste inhibitors such as foods and herbs are better to use.

For men, if you want to take this path, you may first consult your doctor or start checking out natural estrogen blockers which can help lower your feminine hormones and boost your manliness (testosterone). As for women, these therapies are usually administered for actual medical conditions such as osteoporosis or breast cancer, so it is better to consult with your physician first.

    natural supplement

How to Lower Estrogen: The Natural Route

For the majority of people without any serious medical conditions, there’s nothing that a balanced diet, supplements and regular exercise can’t achieve. This is actually the primary method we recommend. It’s generally safer, for starters.

To optimize your lifestyle with estrogen dominance in mind, consider the following suggestions below.

Many natural products and foods can act as aromatase inhibitors. These include:

    • Red Wine (Resveratrol) and Grape Seed Extract
    • White Button Mushrooms
    • Mangosteen
    • Arimistane (strong inhibitor, DHEA metabolite)

It is also recommended to follow a diet rich in vegetables and high in fiber for as long as your estrogen levels are too high. Specifically consuming cruciferous vegetables such as maca, brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, and cauliflower will help as they contain estrogen regulating compounds and minerals such as zinc that can give your testosterone an extra boost. Higher levels of testosterone can tip the hormonal ratios in your favour and also help improve symptoms of estrogen dominance.

You should also match the dietary changes with a heavy resistance training program for the ultimate fat-reducing and estrogen balancing effects. Overweight and obese women and men are at a higher risk of developing high estrogen levels as fat stores produce more estrogen which leads to more body fat and the vicious cycle continues.

In addition, also avoid high amounts of alcohol. The liver is the body’s main detoxification organ and is responsible for metabolizing estrogen. Therefore, regular excess alcohol consumption will impair this process and will result in an accumulation of more estrogen in the body. Also be careful about consuming phytoestrogens such as beer and soy, as these can make your symptoms worse. Read more about phytoestrogens here.

Wrapping It Up: Consider a Lifestyle Overhaul

There is no sure win formula to battle estrogen dominance overnight. Every person, either female or male, will have their own relative normal hormonal ratios with respect to their genetic predisposition and lifestyle.

Note that people should always start focusing on healthy living. Don’t skip your veggies, especially the cruciferous ones. Cut down on processed carbs and sugars, settle for a high-fiber diet instead (with complex carbohydrates). Also, do resistance exercise while you’re at it.

If your estrogen dominance still don’t seem to budge, don’t hesitate to ask for help from your physician who may recommend you a prescription or supplements if your issues are bad enough.

Natural SERM PCT: The Anti-Estrogenic Properties of Edible Seaweed

Estrogen is generally associated with women, but it also plays a role in hormone balance among men. Balancing hormones can be difficult, especially as you grow older or for bodybuilders who are using steroids. After a steroid cycle, bodybuilders often use a pharmaceutical SERM PCT to bring back natural hormone levels into balance and to avoid estrogenic side effects.

A decrease in libido, impotency, irritability, bloating, weight gain, mild headaches, and gynecomastia (female-like breast tissue development) are just a few of some of the physical manifestations that can occur when there is too much estrogen in the body. When this happens, many men resort to estrogen blockers, aromatase inhibitors or similar treatments such as SERMs to counter this imbalance.

While there are many pharmaceutical types of SERMs on the market, there are also more natural options that can be found in the form of edible seaweed. But first, let’s take a closer look at pharmaceutical SERMs.

Natural SERM PCTWhat Exactly Is a SERM PCT?SERMs vs. Aromatase Inhibitors – What’s the Difference?SERMs and Their Health RisksE. Cottonii – an Effective and Safe Natural SERME. Cottonii in Rebirth by Black Lion Research

What Exactly Is a SERM PCT?

The term SERM is an acronym that refers to selective estrogen receptor modulators. They are pharmaceutically developed drugs that selectively block estrogen receptors in the body.

Commonly used in breast cancer patients and survivors, SERMs are also used by many men. Especially by those who are into bodybuilding to increase testosterone levels, or by patients who suffer from low testosterone levels.

PCT stands for Post Cycle Therapy, and is usually a combination therapy of pharmaceuticals and supplements used by bodybuilders at the end of a steroid cycle to bring back normal hormone levels after being supressed by steroids.

The pharmaceutical products Tamoxiphen (sold as Nolvadex) and Clomid are some of the most common SERMs for men on the market today.

SERMs vs. Aromatase Inhibitors – What’s the Difference?

SERMs are different from Aromatase inhibitors (AIs), and are touted as more superior because they do not directly alter estrogen levels in the body.

Aromatase inhibitors such as Arimidex block testosterone from turning into estrogen. While it does its work pretty well keeping estrogen levels low, the brain still continues to receive chemical signals that it needs more estrogen.

    estradiol

Thus, the body still continues to try to produce more of it by ramping up testosterone production. This causes a cycle that requires continuous intake of AIs or it can result in a spike of estrogen once treatment stops and aromatase kicks in on the excess testosterone.

Also If you by accident manage to take too much AIs and bring your estrogen down too low, there is not much else to do then succumb to the side effects until your body has managed to rebalance itself which can take 1-2 weeks.

There are some natural, effective and safer aromatase inhibitors available on the market such as Arimistane, we recently reviewed the best ones in our article on estrogen blockers.

Different from AIs, SERMs, on the other hand, simply attach themselves to estrogen receptors, tricking the body that estrogen has attached to them. When this happens, estrogen can no longer attach to said receptors, thereby not allowing excess estrogen to produce adverse effects.

It should be noted that estrogen is still important in a man’s body and also has positive effects when its in normal range, which is why this more gentle approach of occupying the estrogen receptors is preferred to directly modifying estrogen levels like AIs do. SERMs simply prevent its negative effects. At the same time, SERMs also stimulate the pituitary and hypothalamus glands to increase and normalize testosterone levels.

    SERMs and Their Health Risks

Between the two pharmaceutical treatments for dealing with excess estrogen and increasing testosterone, SERMs are often recommended as the better option. However, even though they are the better option, they also have their own share of disadvantages.

The most notable disadvantage is the risk of long-term systemic side effects that they can have on the body. As they are pharmaceutical in nature, these synthetic chemicals can be disadvantageous to one’s health – particularly when used regularly for long periods of time.

Regular intake of Tamoxifen, for example, has been associated with an increased risk of endometrial cancer. This has been seen among women who underwent treatment with Tamoxifen for breast cancer treatment.

Risk getting more cancers from your cancer treatment does not make a whole lot of sense treatment wise. It can also be heavy on the kidneys and can be a cause nephrotoxicity or kidney damage.

Aside from long-term side effects effects, it can also have short-term side effects for both men and women. These include weight gain, hot flashes, neurocognitive issues (memory and thinking), blood clots and vision problems.

    E. Cottonii – an Effective and Safe Natural SERM

Given the risks of pharmaceutical SERMs, studies have been conducted to find natural versions of these types of estrogen modulators. The good news is that there are natural alternatives that seems to be very promising – one of which is in the form of a seaweed.

Studies show that E. Cottonii, a form of edible seaweed, has natural effects comparable to pharmaceutical SERMs. In a recent study on rats, E. Cottonii outperformed Tamoxifen in suppressing tumor growth by 27% while displaying little toxicity to the liver and kidneys.

So not only is it a more effective SERM then Tamoxifen, it also comes without the risks of side effects or toxicity that Tamoxifen has. Truly a groundbreaking discovery.

The E. Cottonii Seaweed, also known as the Eucheuma Seaweed or Sea Birds Nest, is a marine algae which is collected from 100% organic sources. It contains vitamins, trace minerals, amino acids, anti oxidants, plant growth hormones and can be found everywhere around the world, although the largest concentration can be found in the Pacific Ocean.

Like many other seaweeds, it contains unique polysaccharides that have health promoting effects, as well as minerals and trace elements that are rarely found in terrestrial plants.

Some notable benefits of Eucheuma Cottonii include the following:

    • Possesses anti-inflammatory properties, making it helpful for various types of swelling, pain and even arthritis. Aside from muscular inflammation, it can also be helpful for kidney inflammation.
    • Like many other seaweeds, it also has a positive effect on thyroid hormones, helping normalize and balance them.
    • Being high in soluble fiber, it helps lower low-density lipoproteins (LDL), which are also known as “bad” cholesterol and increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol. These soluble fibers attach themselves to cholesterol particles inside the digestive system and bring them out of the body. This also lowers the risk of heart disease.
    • Likewise, its fiber content helps promote gastrointestinal health, reducing incidences of constipation, soothing away stomachaches and helping prevent gastric ulcers. Its resistant starch content also helps feed probiotic bacteria in the GI tract, helping boost one’s overall immune system.
    • It is also a natural source of collagen, a long-chain amino acid which is abundant in the body. An external source of collage helps keep cartilage, ligaments and joints healthy, and is also essential for the appearance and health of the skin and the hair.
    • It is a good source of calcium and phosphorus, which helps contribute to strong bones. In fact an amount of this seaweed contains about 600 times more calcium then the same weight from animal sources.
    • It is a rich source of iron, which is great for anemia. It contains 28 times more iron by weight than in equal weight animal sources.
    • With a pH level of 7.6, E. Cottonii Seaweed is slightly alkaline. This – along with other alkaline foods, helps shift the body to alkaline levels, which is very important for countering acid buildup and inflammation, as well as for keeping the body in optimal condition.
    • Depending on where it is sourced, a serving of E. Cottonii contains up to 10% protein. A hundred grams of seaweed also contains 10 mg of Vitamin E.
    • It can be a great and easy addition to vegan diets – or any diet for that matter – being very low in calories.
    • It is also rich in antioxidants such as astaxanthin, carotenoid, fucoxanthin, flavonoids, phenolic acid and tannins, which prevent and revert free radical damage. Its antioxidant content also gives it excellent wound healing properties.

These advantages make E. Cottonii a good food source. But its use does not stop there – it is also excellent in treating hormonal imbalance in men.

While this seaweed has many benefits – its use is generally limited due to its taste. A lot of people readily eat seaweeds in many cultures, but the taste is still an acquired one, and may not be to everyone’s liking.

The good news, however, is that some health supplement companies are now tapping into this underused health resource and using them as ingredients in supplements.

One such company is Black Lion Research, which has capitalized on E. Cottonii’s effects to deliver the first ever all natural SERM supplement on the market.

    E. Cottonii in Rebirth by Black Lion Research

Rebirth by Black Lion Research is one of the few products on the market that contain E. Cottonii.

Aside from this ingredient, Rebirth also contains another potent ingredient – Ellagic acid. This plant chemical is naturally occurring and is found primarily in pomegranates but also strawberries, cranberries, raspberries and other plant foods.

Ellagic acid has its own host of health benefits, but the most important one to take note of is that it naturally suppresses E(2)-metabolizing-enzymes. These enzymes are responsible for the creation of estrogen.

Aside from its estrogen inhibiting properties, it is particularly noted for supporting prostate and testicular health. Other than that, studies also show that it helps the liver break down carcinogens from the blood, reduces the risk of liver and heart disease and encourages faster healing.

Together with E. Cottonii, these natural SERMs work together to hinder the effects of estrogen in the body. Being natural and organic compounds, they do not cause the systemic side effects that can come with pharmaceutical products.

That said, Rebirth by Black Lion Research, should be something worth considering if you’re looking for a natural way to treat hormone imbalance. Not only are the ingredients in Rebirth great for managing estrogen and hormonal imbalance, they also come with a host of other health benefits.

We highly recommend Rebirth for all guys looking for natural options to increase their testosterone without estrogenic side effects. It is now possible to run a completely natural SERM PCT.

Estrogen Rich Foods and Phytoestrogens: The Good and the Bad

Phytoestrogens, the plant-based hormone commonly found in estrogen rich foods such as soy and flax seeds, are still considered a controversial part of nutrition. Some studies believe it’s bad for you while others think they are potent antioxidants that can help fight certain cancers.

Understanding the role of phytoestrogens in your health is the key to keeping balanced hormone levels throughout your life.

In this article, we will learn about phytoestrogens – the positives and negatives of these plant-based estrogens and how they influence the bodily processes in men.

Estrogen Rich Foods and PhytoestrogensWhat Are Phytoestrogens?Estrogen Rich Food SourcesPhytoestrogen in Men – the GoodWhat’s the Bad?How to Protect Your Body From Endocrine Disruptors

    What Are Phytoestrogens?

Phytoestrogens are substances commonly found in plants that can mimic the activity of human estrogens. Of course, plants cannot produce a hormone substance the same as the human reproductive systems hormones such as estrogen. However, phytoestrogens can definitely affect human’s hormonal metabolism – in both males and females.

Since most of the studies about phytoestrogens have been associated with breast cancer, there is a considerable importance on the influence of phytoestrogen in women’s health. However, men can be affected by phytoestrogens too, despite the somewhat lack of research in this area.

    Estrogen Rich Food Sources

Phytoestrogen is found in many foods, supplements and even essential oils. Below are some of the foods that contain estrogen:

    • Soybeans and soy products
    • Flaxseeds
    • Oats
    • Barley
    • Lentils
    • Sesame seeds
    • Apples
    • Carrots
    • Wheat germ
    • Coffee
    • Licorice root
    • Bourbon
    • Beer

Certain foods that increase estrogen levels should be taken with a grain of salt. But soy is the most concentrated food that contains phytoestrogens, it is important to examine the safety of consuming soy and soy products. Unfermented soy contains a long list of nasty things that should be avoided while fermented soy is a great probiotic food.

It’s best to remove all kinds of soy milk, soy protein and other forms of soy from your diet except for soy lecithin, a fermented soy product which has lots of health benefits when not consumed in excess.

Phytoestrogen in Men – the Good

Estrogen in men at normal levels is vital for many functions. It is critical for brain function, specifically for verbal memory. It is essential for new neuron development and neuron maintenance.

Balanced estrogen levels is key for a healthy libido too. It is no secret that testosterone stimulates the production of nitric oxide, however, experts were surprised to discover that there were estrogen receptors that also stimulate nitric oxide. Therefore, it may be almost as essential to check estrogen levels as testosterone in males.

So far, the best studies highlighting estrogen rich foods and male hormonal balance involved the cardiovascular system. The researchers show that men who take a high amount of phytoestrogen-containing foods have improved blood flow, increased dilation in their arteries and regulation of their blood pressure.

Some of these effects may involve changes in hormonal metabolism brought on by these estrogenic foods. This means, the effect of phytoestrogen can also be good and beneficial.

Resveratrol is a form of phytoestrogen that is found in high concentration in grapes as well as in Japanese Knotweed. It is a known performance-enhancing supplement that can act as an anti-inflammatory agent and could increase testosterone levels while blocking estrogen.

Recent studies have shown that resveratrol can lessen exercise-induced muscle damage and support muscle repair. It can also increase muscle fat oxidation, which suggests a fat-burning effect.

Others might help against prostate cancer or help reduce hair loss. Depending on your needs and overall hormonal balance, your phytoestrogen needs might be different.

Excessive phytoestrogen intake over time with foods high in estrogen is never advisable for men, moderation is key and should be used according to needs.

Focus on the foods with proven benefit for men, like Resveratrol and Pomegranate. We recommend men try to keep these two always in their diet, they have many amazing benefits for men.

    pomegranate

Some estrogenic foods can be beneficial because they have a low estrogenic impact but still compete with estrogen and hence helps to keep estrogen levels lower and more balanced.

Besides soy, flax seed, and beer, men should not be that scared about food with estrogen and phytoestrogens. Many plants contain phytoestrogens, yet we know they are very beneficial foods.

Dairy, on the other hand, contains way more estradiol estrogen then in plants, yet most guys see no wrong in consuming this. Obviously, most guys are not properly informed on the matter of estrogen rich foods.

    What’s the Bad?

Endocrine disruptors are natural and chemical compounds that disrupt hormonal balance in the body, which may cause health problems when they accumulate over time.

The most prevalent endocrine disruptors are nasty chemicals found in pesticides, plastics and even in estrogen supplements, but they can also be in the form of progestin (progesterone-mimickers) and phytoestrogens.

Endocrine disruptors have caused hormonal imbalances in both men and women, leading to an overall drop in the average age of puberty and contribute to different fertility issues such as ovarian cancer and endometriosis in women and testicular cancer and low sperm counts in men.

One of the most terrible endocrine disruptors are the xenoestrogens. They are chemicals found in food and the environment that, when ingested, interact with the estrogen system of the body.

Xenoestrogens are of particular concern because they often trigger our body’s estrogen systems with far more power than our own naturally-produced (endogenous) estrogen does. Are they related to phytoestrogens in any way?

The answer is no. While they act the same, phytoestrogens naturally occur in plant foods, while xenoestrogens are man-made monstrosities.

In our opinion, there is nothing to be worried about consuming phytoestrogen foods, unless you are taking them in great abundance and in a strictly isolated form like taking natural estrogen supplements. Consuming or taking foods with estrogen in excess, in whatever form, are not exactly desirable for those who want to stay lean and muscular.

Too high estrogen levels over long periods of time can lead to problems such as prostate cancer and BPH. We here at Anabolic Health has reviewed the Science and we firmly believe that too high estrogen levels are the leading cause of hair loss in men, DHT is not the main culprit.

DHT actually helps keep estrogen balanced. If you have high estrogen levels, there will likely be high DHT levels because your body is trying to balance it. Progesterone is a natural balancer of both estrogen and DHT in men. Progesterone decrease with age and this is one reason why we often see increasing levels of estrogen and DHT the older you get.

    beer belly

Some natural estrogen foods like soy, flax and beer should be avoided by men. You know what happens to the male body when you consume too much beer, there is a reason for that beer belly more then excess calories. The estrogenic effects of soy, flax and beer seems to act too strongly and comes with adverse effects, not to mention that soy is also often genetically modified and highly processed.

For men, the real threat are the xenoestrogens.

How to Protect Your Body From Endocrine Disruptors

There are two ways to protect the body against the accumulation of endocrine disruptors such as xenoestrogen and certain phytoestrogens.

    • Follow a diet full of healthy, organic, non-GMO foods.
    • Practice a lifestyle that avoids the use of harsh chemicals and plastics wherever possible. The more you are exposed to these endocrine disruptors over the course of your life, the more likely that you’ll experience negative reactions.

Another good way to neutralize the effect of phytoestrogens is to match them with phyto-progestins or progestins found in plants.

One good example is Clary Sage Oil, which contains both phyto-progestins and phytoestrogens, which balance the impact of one another. It also helps protect the body from a dominance of one hormone.

Sclareol, a phytoestrogen in Clary Sage Oil, is not really an estrogen. If there is a estrogen deficiency in the body it can mimic estrogen but it will not create more estrogen in the body.

clary sage oilPurchase This Product on Amazon

This can be useful to keep hormones in balance. This function is similar to how SERMs work and really show how some phytoestrogens can be superior in function to pharmaceutical medicines.

Phytoestrogens cannot be categorized healthy or unhealthy. The truth is, some types can be beneficial in certain doses, especially for women who often wonder how to increase estrogen, but some types in excess can also cause an adverse effect, particularly in men.

For the ones that can act as potent endocrine disruptors, it’s better to limit your intake overall and talk to your doctor before deciding on how to increase your estrogen from your diet or through the use of special foods.

One thing is for certain – better avoid soy as your source of phytoestrogen, rather look for healthier, more nutritious foods with estrogen such as certain vegetables, seeds or fruits.

The debate over phytoestrogens still continues in the research community, but if you take these facts on phytoestrogen into account, you can get the most of the benefits of estrogen rich foods while curbing their potential negative side effects.
